From the urban vibrancy of Cape Town to the dramatic Kalahari Desert and then returning through the glorious flowers of the Western Cape and the Atlantic Coast to the Cederberg Mountains, this is truly a trip where the scenery changes on a daily basis. We have selected characterful properties which are very much part of the fabric of the landscapes in which they sit – there are also options to camp in several of the locations if you wish to sleep under canvas.

Northern Cape and Coast ITINERARY

  • DAY 1-3 Clarendon Bantry Bay

    Today on arrival you will be met at Cape Town International Airport and transfered to the the Clarendon Bantry Bay. This sophisticated and sun-drenched luxury house is perched above the brilliant blue waters of the Atlantic and offers a truly extraordinary experience, only 8 km from the city of Cape Town. Decor in each of the rooms is a modern mix of classic design with a local flavour. Flooded with light and blessed with ocean views at every turn, Clarendon Bantry Bay promises an unforgettable stay. All the rooms have direct dial telephones, digital safes, satellite television, mini bars, air-conditioning, and twin or king-size beds. Each of the seven spacious ensuite bedrooms have either a sea or mountain view, and are designed and decorated in individual style, combining thoughtful detail with luxurious understated quality. Day 2: This morning you will be taken to our base for your trip briefing and vehicle handover. You will be briefed on the vehicle, equipment, driving conditions, route and safety issues. Please expect this briefing to take at least two hours. You will be asked to sign the safety affirmation form to confirm that you have read and understood all the contents of the Safari Drive Handbook. Spend the rest of the day to explore Cape Town and the area. To the East of Cape Town are the Twelve Apostles Bays –beyond which Walker Bay attracts huge pods of whales and offers the best land based whale watching in the world. This is definitely worth a trip to see. Day 3: Final full day in Cape Town, The V & A is the buzzy waterfront area with excellent bars, restaurants, art galleries and museums. All set around the modern marina. This is a great area to explore on foot.
  • DAY 4 & 5 Lemoenfontain Game Lodge, Beaufort West

    Today you will head North east out of Cape Town and through the Winelands to Beaufort West. This is a scenic drive with the ocean to the South and the backdrop of mountains. On arriving at Lemoenfontain you have the rest of the day to relax and explore your new surroundings or head out on their reserve to spot zebra and other plains game. Drive time approx. 4-5 hrs. Day 5: Full day at Lemoenfontain. There are a huge range of activities here from trekking on the reserve to exploring further field by 4x4 or on horseback. All for a 5 hour drive time from Cape Town.
  • DAY 6 Gariep Country Lodge. Campsite. Prieska

    In the centre of the Northern Cape farmlands is the small town of Prieska bordering the Orange River. This is the perfect stop over point before you head further north. You will be driving through farmlands, past lakes and forests and the scale of the landscape is really noticeable. 5 hour drive time from Beaufort West.
  • DAY 7 & 8 A Riviera Garden, Spitzkop Nature Reserve

    Continuing North you will drive through a range of mountains into Griqualand West. This is a wild and remote landscape, far from the tourist routes of the South. As you head further North the landscape becomes increasingly arid as you approach Spitzkop and the Kalahari sands. In Spitzkop there is good wildlife viewing with the backdrop of the sand dunes. 3-4 hour drive from Prieska. Day 8: Full day to explore the area around the small town of Upington and the Spitzkop Nature Reserve. Climb sand dunes, spot Oryx (Gemsbok), Springbok, Zebra, Eland, Steenbok, Wildebeest, Camel, Suricate, Ostrich. Or just relax by the pool.
  • DAY 9 & 10 Naries Namakwa Retreat

    Today you will drive West parallel to the Namibia border to the town of Springbok, close by is the Naries Namakwa Retreat. This is set on a beautiful rocky outcrop with panoramic views across the seasonal flowerlands. This bursts into flower in the spring and with over 600 species, completely transforms this usually arid region 4 hour drive from Spitzkop Day 10: Explore this untouched region of Namaqualand, Namakwa and the Richtersveld National park. This is big sky landscape where desert adapted antelope and zebras roam. Being a desert region it does get extremely hot in the dry summer months.
  • DAY 11 & 12 Oystercatcher Lodge

    After the dust and aridity of the desert landscapes you will today drive South to the coast to Paternoster. This route brings you South through the wildflower reserves as the road follows the Atlantic coastline. Oystercatcher Lodge is set overlooking St Helena Bay where pods of dolphins can whales can be seen from the terrace. For further refreshment there is a large swimming pool. 6 hour drive from Springbok. Day 12: Explore the coastline and area around Paternoster. This area is famed for its birdlife and offers a huge contrast to the dry North.
  • DAY 13 & 14 Bartholomews Klip

    You will drive inland today through the majestic Cederberg Mountains to Bartholomews Klip. This is a working cattle ranch as well as a vast nature reserve with a lovely Dutch style homestead. The mountains rise up behind the fishing lake whilst on the plains in front you can watch the cattle being herded. Nature drives take you out onto the plains where Orxy, Zebra and other plains game roam. In the hills behind the lodge you can hear leopards calling. 2 hour drive from Paternoster Day 14: Head out on game drives, watch the cattle ranchers, go fishing or head out on bicycles. If however you just want to put your feet up under the shade of a great tree with a good book then this is the perfect way to round your trip off.
  • DAY 15 The Clarendon Bantry Bay

    You will return to Cape Town today (around an hours drive). Here you will be met by the team for your debrief. You then have the rest of the day to relax and the option of a final nigh in Cape Town or we can transfer you to the airport for your International flights home.
