Classic Botswana

Overview

This two week self-drive safari has you drive through Botswana's best terrain whilst staying in a mixture of stylish tented camps and in-the-wild campsites. Starting in Maun, you begin by visiting the vast salt flats of Nxai Pan before heading on a one-way journey to the Victoria Falls. You drive through the Moremi Game Reserve, Savuti Channel and onto northern Chobe. Finished with two nights on the mighty Zambezi River. It's a wonderful itinerary and is available in reverse too. You might also opt to fly into the Okavango Delta for 2-3 nights, which is a worthwhile inclusion.

Itinerary

Location 1

Gray's Eden, Maun

Day 1

Arrive in Maun where you will be met and transferred to Gray's Eden . A night in this luxury boutique hotel is a wonderful way to start your adventure in Botswana. Once you have settled in, a member of the Safari Drive team will meet you for your vehicle and route briefing in preparation for your trip.

South Camp Campsite, Nxai Pan

Day 2

After a refreshing night's sleep you head out to the huge grasslands and empty salt flats of Nxai Pan. Here you will find a host of desert creatures, Oyrx, Bat-eared Fox and the ever present Springbok are common here.

Location 3

Baines Baobab Campsite, Nxai Pan

Day 3

Today you drive across Nxai Pan to the impressive Baines Boabab Campsite. Set amongst seven huge Baobab trees, overlooking the vast salt flats of Kudiakam Pan, this campsite is special. The campsite pitches are well spread out so you feel perfectly alone under the African night sky.

South Gate Campsite, Moremi Game Reserve

Day 4

Starting your journey north, you will drive back through Maun and onto Moremi Game Reserve. There is an excellent game drive around Black Pools, a must for campers at South Gate.

Location 5

Third Bridge Campsite, Moremi Game Reserve

Days 5 & 6

This morning you drive deeper into Moremi Game Reserve and will stay at Third bridge campsite for two nights. This is a great area for wildlife, Red Lechwe and the secretive Sitatunga can be found. Its also a great place to take a mokoro trip through the channels.

Sango Safari Camp, Khwai nr. Moremi Game Reserve

Days 7 & 8

For the next two nights you stay at Sango Safari Camp. This intimate tented camp is set on the banks of the Khwai River, its simply furnished with great food, great guides and a friendly atmosphere.

Location 7

Savuti Campsite, Savuti

Day 9

Leaving the Moremi area you drive north into Chobe and the Savuti region. The Savuti area will be one of the most remote parts of your trip. The range of species here is enormous and their numbers can be staggering. The campsite is set next to the channel with simple ablution blocks.

Ihaha Campsite, Chobe National Park

Days 10 & 11

Today you head east right across northern Chobe to Ihaha Campsite. This campsite is situated right on the banks of the Chobe River. At the right time of the year this area offers some of the very best game viewing in Africa - elephant abound. The campsite is simple but tidy, the ablution blocks have hot and cold running water.

The Woodlands at Waterberry, Livingstone

Days 12 & 13

Your journey takes you over the border and into Zambia today. The Woodlands at Waterberry is in a forested area just 200 m from the main Waterberry Lodge (where you could choose to stay if preferred) and has just four safari tents. Here you are close to the banks of the Zambezi River surrounded by the beautiful gardens. From Waterberry you can take boat trips on the river and visit the mighty Victoria Falls, this is a fabulous way to round off your Botswana adventure.

Today you will be transferred to Livingstone Airport in plenty of time for your international flight home.
